International Earth Day
When we heard the word “Earth”, surely the thing that is going to go pass our minds is a place where all living creatures are living. Because we live on Earth, we got to take care of it as our own living place, so that it is still good for us to live in.
Do you know that every year around the world people celebrated the Earth Day to raise the awareness and appreciation towards our planet? International Earth Day is being celebrated every year on the 22nd of April. Based on the Earth Day website, Earth Day points out the birth of the modern environmental move in 1970 that was being quoted by the USA’s environmental teacher, Gaylord Nelson.
The tremendous fire tragedy at Cuyahoga River, Cleveland that was caused by throwing chemical waste on the river was causing a lot of environmental people focusing on large scaled environmental pollution such as air pollution that is caused by industrial chemical waste. At that time only a few amounts of American people knew what recycle is. Senator Gaylord Nelson was being chosen as the 1962 US Senate. He was willing to ensure the government that our planet is endangered. Nelson then- in 1969 became one of the people that developed the idea of celebrating Earth Day. Nelson announced the Earth Day concept at a press conference in Seattle on fall 1969. From then, the Earth Day celebration was known widely by the world.
This year’s Earth Day is on Thursday, April 22nd, 2021. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is “Restore Our Earth”. Quoted from the website earthday.org, this year’s theme is focusing on nature’s processing, green technology that is being developed, and innovative ideas that can help with restoring the ecosystem. The theme “Restoring Our Earth” declines the assumptions of mitigation or adaption as the way of dealing with climate change. More than 1 billion people from 192 countries now is participating on Earth Day therefore it is one of world’s biggest day.
