Since March, schools have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several countries must implement a lockdown system to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus because of the climate and lifestyle that is always crowded. However, Indonesia has not implemented a Lockdown but has implemented the PSBB (Large-Scale Social Restriction) policy. So, Indonesia must implement a new education system called online school, which requires all students to learn independently through their respective gadgets. This is under the Circular of the Minister of Education and Culture No.4 of 2020 concerning the Implementation of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19).
However, in fact, not every online activity is what schools expect. Not a few students have to help their parents to help with the economy at home, the limitations of the gadgets they use because of the economy, and the limited internet quota they have. It is not easy to solve this problem, even though the Ministry of Education and Culture has helped several students whose conditions are considered more important. Besides teachers who are born from technological advances that are still lacking or are often called technology illiterates are also very difficult by this online system, so that teachers find it difficult to get the results of this online teaching and learning activity. SMAN 1 Singaraja certainly has planned this online system according to the conditions of each student.
Quoted from kejarcita.id some of the obstacles faced by teachers and students by using this online system, namely teachers find it difficult in the process of completing the curriculum for students and time constraints so that teachers cannot meet the load of learning hours. On the student side, they often experience a lack of concentration in understanding the material, too much workload given by the teacher, stress, and boredom because they have studied at home for too long. Teachers and students of SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja feel the same way. According to the opinion of one SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja student, this online system is less effective when compared to offline because not all students have adequate facilities and infrastructure to facilitate learning with this online system, maybe some students whose facilities support it will find it easier to understand the material. Also, in this online system students feel overwhelmed because the deadline for submitting assignments given is too short with a large number of assignments so that students can also be psychologically disturbed due to prolonged stress. Students also find it difficult to understand the material provided by the subject teacher, especially subjects that count really need a direct explanation from a teacher.
Not only students who experience difficulties in the online system, but teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja also feel it. Several teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja stated that there were limited space and time in providing learning, socialization and communication between teachers and students was very limited so that the teacher could not monitor the level of students’ understanding of the material. Teachers who have a lack of technological knowledge must be adaptive in the sense that in the current pandemic conditions they must quickly understand the use of technology to implement this online system. Maybe for teachers who are familiar with current technological advances, they certainly feel that the process of teaching and learning activities is easier.
Thus, online learning is an effective solution to break the chain of the spread of COVID-19 and becomes a consideration for choosing a temporary learning system. Online learning is not entirely easy and has a positive impact on students and teachers in the teaching and learning process. The online system does help in breaking the chain of the spread of the coronavirus, but it is flat? On average, with the application of the online system teachers and students feel overwhelmed. Therefore, let us be responsive in adaptive and innovative thinking to keep up with the teaching and learning process in schools.
Rest assured we can break the chain of spreading COVID-19!
